spring ’24 {seasonal list dreams}

You can see in the background, above, that garden clean-up is on a spring list! These narcissus + fritillaria are some of the many bulbs I buried last fall.

The vernal equinox is long past, so this list arrives more than fashionably late. But it feels like the kind of season when it’s most necessary.

First, because it’s moving fast!

And second? Just…the nature of spring. There’s always lots to do come warm weather, and this list started out feeling too much to-do‘ish. Exactly what seasonal dreams are not supposed to be. (Somewhat, sure — but the idea is to keep joy + delight on the daily radar. To habitualize tiny, or not-so-, celebrations.)

So I edited.

I’ll highlight a few today —

[ ] visit the Audubon Nature Center

{ X ] Erie Philharmonic Plays Broadway @ the Warner, for Mom’s birthday

[ ] ferns in black pots by garage

I love ferns — their simplicity…fullness…and if you find their sweet spot, they’re even low maintenance! This season I’ll try some in a shady spot that’s usually naked — the garage doors. I think they’ll look nice with the brick, too.

[ X ] spring break* road trip (Annapolis, OBX, Savannah, FLA]

*Keep in mind next year: adjusted hours/closures on Easter (second year in a row I’ve forgotten to take this into account!); break up the return trip, 7-8 hours driving/day (the max for my back).

[ ] May retreat

[ ] finally(!) paint cottage interior, June 1 deadline

This has taken far longer than planned — mostly because I don’t like to paint. Correction!! I don’t like the prep that painting requires. The painting, itself, is pretty darn satisfying.

[ ] Bluestone Perennials field trip to pick up fall mums

[ ] Patterson After Dark library fundraiser is happening May 11!

Planning meetings, recruiting volunteers, working. Local? I’ll have tickets for you!

[ ] visit Roger Tory Peterson Institute to see Wildwing, West Virginian nature illustrator Rosalie Haizlett exhibit (closes 6/2)

…and tune in to her virtual art talk at noon on May 3, if I can!

[ ] experiment with lemon recipes

A few I’ve recently come across stick out in my head — hard lemonade (with herbs, I’m thinking). An Italian lemon ricotta cake. And I just put a batch of preserved lemon through the food processor. (Which we added to chicken soup with orzo last night. Yum.) This Algerian-Portuguese coffee also intrigues me…

[ ] sing in spring concert on May 5

…and I made a separate list for the chores!

How about you? What’s on your [literal or proverbial] list this spring?

  1. First up leaving town!! I fly to NC tomorrow to visit my friend Leslie (and bonus, see college friend Nina). There are bulbs (Dahlias and Gladioli) to plant when I return. Also, new recipes to try. Make an appointment with an audiologist (What??). Spring is busy. You have some fun things to look forward to – enjoy!!

  2. Sounds like you have some very good dreams.

My dream ……………………..slowing down. Being more intentional.

On the practical side —- rip up the sprouts of peony and Lily of the Valley that got missed when we redid the front garden.

    1. If I lived near you, I’d take those to transplant! Though I hear peonies don’t live to be transplanted…
At our old house, it seemed the more I tried to rip out one particular rose bush and a bed of lilies, the more they came back. (Grr!!!) Of course, the roses I TRIED to grow were pathetic! Murphy’s law, I guess 🙂

  3. I’m sure that once the weather is more predictable (because I know here we’ve had several attempts at spring followed by brief returns of winter), you will get a lot of that outdoors stuff done. I am looking forward to getting back in the garden and starting my seeds, which I should probably start doing soon!

  4. What a nice list of events and dreams. And now, I’m thinking about Italian Lemon Ricotta Cake. This year, I am making a conscious effort to enjoy the gentle unfolding or Spring. It goes by so quickly. I’m also doing a little embroidery and stitching. My Spring list includes cleaning up the garden beds and then planting tomatoes, cucumbers, basil as well as filling in a couple of bare spots in the perennial strip along the fence. Oh and washing the woolens.

    1. please do!!!

I was so happy with my Oleato (which I started making before Starbucks brought them to the US. SO YUMMY.) Hoping I’ll have as good luck this time around.

  6. Keeping “joy + delight” forefront! Experimenting with some new teas and mixers, looking for a (NA) “signature summer drink”. Making a summer TBR list. Getting the porch ready (Marc did 99% of this last weekend). Finding a perfect pair of white jeans (kind of crosses into the to-do category but I’ll feel all the J+D if I succeed!)
